Mobility in Hațeg – Learning the Earth’s Stories in the heart of a Geopark

Between the 22nd to 26th of Septemeber 2025, the EMME partners gathered in Romania for a full week of activities hosted by the UNESCO Global Geopark Țara Hațegului – University of Bucharest. The mobility focused on deepening participants’ understanding of geological heritage, field-based learning, and the strong connection between landscapes and community identity.

The programme combined workshops, guided field visits, interactive discussions, and hands-on educational experiences inspired by the local geological and cultural setting. Teachers and students explored volcanic formations, fossil sites, historical landmarks, and community-based initiatives that bring the story of the land closer to learners of all ages.
Highlights of the mobility included field trips to key geosites within Hațeg Country UNESCO Global Geopark, interactive sessions on outdoor education, nature interpretation and geodiversity, cultural visits that showcased the region’s traditions, crafts, and historical heritage, and meetings with local experts, rangers, and educators involved in long-term conservation and community projects.
The mobility strengthened the partnership across Romania, Portugal, Croatia, and Slovakia, offering all participants an authentic experience of how geology, biodiversity, and local culture intersect. The week concluded with a reflective session on how the practices learned in Hațeg can be integrated into the upcoming EMME „Memories of Hațeg” video documentaries.

This mobility marked an essential step in shaping the project’s educational vision — turning Hațeg’s “Memories of the Earth” into meaningful learning experiences for students across Europe.
